After the Wars of the Roses, the House of Lancaster triumphed over the House of York, marking the rise of a powerful new dynasty. Henry VII, through his marriage to Elizabeth of York, sought to unite the two houses and reinforce the legitimacy of his reign. To do this, he embraced the medieval tradition of heraldry, displaying symbols and motifs that asserted his rightful claim to the English throne, both to his subjects and potential rivals.
His son, Henry VIII, continued his father’s mission of securing the Tudor dynasty’s legitimacy. One prominent location where these heraldic symbols are displayed is Hampton Court Palace, one of the king’s most celebrated residences, used for both leisure and grand events.
The Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace is adorned with ten stone beasts, representing the lineage of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. These creatures, both real and mythical, symbolize the strength and legacy of one of England’s most powerful dynasties. In honor of these symbols, The Royal Mint has created The Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, a tribute to the ten heraldic beasts that line the Moat Bridge.
