How these prices work
- Live quotes
- Interbank quotes, taken several times a minute while the market is open. The price we show is the Ask: the price level dealers quote for buying. Markets move every second. Charts, ranges and history show market prices.
- Day change
- Measured from the previous 5 pm New York close, the convention used across the bullion industry. The percentage is the market’s move; the dollar change is shown on the Ask.
- Long-term history
- Official LBMA auction prices: gold and silver since 1968, platinum and palladium since 1990, continued with our own 5 pm New York closes after the latest LBMA day.
- Market hours
- Sunday 6 pm to Friday 5 pm New York time, with a one-hour break at 5 pm on weekdays. Prices don’t move while the market is closed, and the charts skip those hours.
- Freshness
- This page refreshes itself every 10 seconds while it is open. If a quote is more than 15 minutes old, the page says “Delayed”.
- Store prices
- Our coins and bars are priced from these same quotes plus a premium, so when spot moves, the store reprices within minutes. Premiums on this site are measured over the Ask; when you sell to us, we pay a share of the spot bid.

Questions about precious metals prices
What is the spot price of a precious metal?
The spot price is the market rate for one troy ounce of the pure metal for immediate delivery, set by continuous trading between banks and dealers around the world. Every bullion dealer prices from it; coins and bars sell at a premium over spot.
How often do the prices on this page update?
Our feed takes a new quote several times a minute while the market is open, and this page refreshes itself every 10 seconds while you have it open. If a quote is more than 15 minutes old, the page says “Delayed”.
Why do you show the Ask?
The Ask is the price level dealers quote when you buy metal, and it is the spot price we measure our premiums over. Markets move every second, so a quote is a level, not a trade. When you sell to us, we pay from the spot bid: our buy-price list shows what that means for each coin and bar.

What is the gold/silver ratio?
It is how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys: 79.4 today. Since 1968 it has averaged 59.1, from a low of 14.0 (Jan 2, 1980) to a high of 123.5 (Mar 17, 2020).
Which precious metal has performed best?
In U.S. dollar spot terms, from official LBMA prices. Over the last 20 years: gold +531%, silver +294%, palladium +187%, platinum +18%. Over the last 10 years: gold +202%, silver +175%, palladium +49%, platinum +44%. Past performance doesn’t predict future prices.
Why does a coin or bar cost more than spot?
A coin or bar costs more than the metal in it because of minting, distribution and the dealer’s costs; that extra is the premium. Premiums are lowest on large, widely traded bars. Today our lowest premiums in stock are 1.77% over the Ask (coins) for gold and 6.79% (rounds) for silver.

When do precious metals trade?
Sunday 6 pm to Friday 5 pm New York time, with a one-hour break at 5 pm on weekdays. Outside those hours the price doesn’t move, which is why the charts here skip them.
Do you buy precious metals at spot?
We buy at a published price for each item, set from the spot price; today’s price for every coin and bar we buy is on our What we pay today page. Walk in to 20 West 47th Street with a photo ID, no appointment, or mail your metal in.

Where does the long-term history come from?
From official LBMA auction prices: gold and silver since 1968, platinum and palladium since 1990, continued with our own 5 pm New York closes after the latest LBMA day. The gold/silver ratio before 1968 comes from MeasuringWorth’s yearly series.
