We pay: what we pay for one item at the spot bid shown, in person or by mail (an estimate: a sale is priced from spot when you sell, and the minimum sale is $1,000). % of spot bid: our buy price per ounce of metal divided by the spot bid, the market price we pay from. Our price: our check/wire price for one, as on the product page (card and PayPal prices are 5% higher). Spread: the gap between the two, as a share of our price. Break-even: how far spot would have to rise from today before our buy price for the item reaches today’s price.

Why the spread is wider on silver

Today a 1 oz American Silver Eagle costs $60.14 from us and we pay $46.68 for one: a spread of 22.4%. On a 1 oz Gold Eagle it is 8.3%. For a Silver Eagle bought today to sell back at no loss, silver would have to rise about 27.1%.

Two things drive the gap. First, minting, shipping and handling a coin cost about the same whatever metal it is made of, so the premium over spot is a far larger share of a $50 ounce of silver than of a $3,948 ounce of gold. Second, we buy silver at a fixed amount below spot per ounce, which is a bigger share of a low price than the percentage we take on gold.

We publish both numbers so you can see the round trip before you buy or sell. Larger bars and coins usually have smaller spreads than fractional and specialty pieces.

Questions sellers ask

Is this the price I’ll get?

These prices are estimates: they follow spot and refresh every 15 minutes. At the counter we quote from the live spot price at the time of sale; by mail, we pay our rates at the spot price when your items arrive and are verified. Items must pass our inspection and tests, and the minimum sale is $1,000.

Why do you pay less than spot?

Spot is the wholesale price of a troy ounce of pure metal. A dealer who buys a coin or bar pays for inspecting, holding and reselling it, so buy prices sit below spot: 97% of spot for popular gold, platinum and palladium items and items we sell (95% for other items), and spot minus $3.00 an ounce for popular and current silver items (minus $5.00 for silver we don’t usually deal in).

What does break-even mean?

If you bought an item from us today at our price, break-even is how far spot would need to rise before our buy price for that item reached what you paid. It assumes our buy formula stays the same.

My item isn’t listed. Will you buy it?

Probably. We buy back what we sell, including collector coins we carry, 90% silver coins and Morgan and Peace dollars, and we buy other gold, silver, platinum and palladium items at our rate for items we don’t usually deal in (spot − 5%, or spot − $5.00 an ounce for silver). Request a quote or call (646) 362-3536. We don’t buy jewelry, scrap or sterling, or casting grain and other grain as standard: for larger lots of grain, contact us and we can melt it into one homogeneous bar, assay it, and pay based on the assay.
