What we pay by bar size

One bar per size: the lowest-priced one in stock today. Our buy price per ounce barely changes with size, but small bars cost more per ounce to buy, so the spread is 24.9% on a 1 g bar and 5.3% on 1 oz.

We pay: what we pay for one item at the spot bid shown, in person or by mail (an estimate: a sale is priced from spot when you sell, and the minimum sale is $1,000). % of spot bid: our buy price per ounce of metal divided by the spot bid, the market price we pay from. Our price: our check/wire price for one, as on the product page (card and PayPal prices are 5% higher). Spread: the gap between the two, as a share of our price. Break-even: how far spot would have to rise from today before our buy price for the item reaches today’s price.

What happens at the counter

For most common gold bars and coins, the process is very quick. The first step is a visual inspection. Because we buy and sell bullion every day, we are familiar with how major gold coins and bars should look, feel, and measure. We then verify the item using our precious-metals testing equipment and weigh it to confirm the weight.

Once we are satisfied that the gold is genuine, we check the current spot price and give you our purchase quote. If you accept, we complete the transaction and issue payment right away. The gold does not have to be sent elsewhere for testing or go through a lengthy approval process. For a standard, recognizable gold bar or coin, the entire process typically takes only 3–6 minutes from inspection to payment.

Does the assay card or packaging matter?

It helps, but it isn’t required. Bars still sealed in their assay card or holder resell better, so we generally pay more for them. Bars that are out of the card or have been handled are still bought, at a lower price.

Selling gold bars: questions

Do I need the assay card to sell a gold bar?

No, but it helps. Bars still sealed in their assay card or holder resell better, so we generally pay more for them. Bars out of the card, or handled, are still bought at a lower price.

  • Sealed in its assay card or holder

    Best price

  • Out of the card, or handled

    Still bought, lower price

How long does it take to sell a gold bar in person?

For a standard, recognizable bar, typically 3–6 minutes from inspection to payment. We inspect it, test it with our precious-metals testing equipment and weigh it, then quote from the current spot price.

Is one large bar or several small bars better to sell?

Our buy price per ounce is about the same for every size on the list. The difference is on the buying side: small bars cost more per ounce, so their round trip is wider. The size table shows today’s numbers.

  • One large bar

About the same buy price per ounce; a narrower round trip

  • Several small bars

About the same buy price per ounce; a wider round trip

Do you buy bars from any refiner?

The bars on our list have published buy prices. For bars from other refiners, request a quote or call us before you come.

What else do you buy?

What we sell in gold, silver, platinum and palladium: bars, rounds and coins, including world gold bullion coins, pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, British Sovereigns, collector coins we carry, 90% silver coins and Morgan and Peace dollars. We don’t buy jewelry, scrap or sterling, or casting grain and other grain as standard: for larger lots of grain, contact us and we can melt it into one homogeneous bar, assay it, and pay based on the assay.

How am I paid?

In person: by check the same day, or by wire or Zelle. By mail: by check, wire or Zelle within 1–3 business days after your bars are approved.
