The gold spot price is the market rate for one troy ounce of .999 fine gold for immediate delivery. It moves nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week, driven by central-bank policy, the U.S. dollar, inflation expectations, and physical demand. The chart and tables on this page are powered by our own live feed — the same prices that drive our product pricing.

Why Invest in Gold?
Gold has preserved purchasing power for centuries and tends to perform well when currencies weaken or markets turn volatile. Physical gold carries no counterparty risk: a coin or bar in your possession is nobody else's liability, which is why it remains the core holding of most precious-metals portfolios.
What Moves the Gold Price?
Real interest rates, the strength of the U.S. dollar, central-bank buying, geopolitical risk, and jewelry and investment demand all move gold. Because gold is quoted in dollars worldwide, a weaker dollar usually lifts the price even when nothing else changes.
Spot Price vs. What You Pay
Dealers buy and sell at a premium or discount to spot that covers minting, distribution, and liquidity. Widely traded bullion — Eagles, Maples, kilo bars — carries the tightest premiums over the Ask shown here. Compare premiums, not just spot.
Gold Price FAQ
What is the spot price of gold?
The spot price is the current market rate for one troy ounce of .999 fine gold for immediate settlement, derived from continuous interbank and futures trading. It is the global reference from which dealer buy and sell prices are set.
How often does the gold price on this page update?
Our feed refreshes about once a minute during market hours, and the page updates itself automatically while you have it open. The long-history chart uses the official LBMA auction prices published each trading day, continued with our 5 pm New York closing prices when the latest LBMA prices aren't available. Charts skip the hours when the market is closed (5 pm to 6 pm New York time on weekdays, and Friday 5 pm to Sunday 6 pm).
What is a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams — about 10% heavier than the regular (avoirdupois) ounce used for food and mail. All precious-metals prices are quoted per troy ounce; a kilogram is 32.151 troy ounces.
Why is the price I pay higher than spot?
Physical bullion sells at a premium over spot that covers fabrication, distribution, insurance, and the dealer's spread. Premiums are smallest on large, widely traded items and rise for small or collectible pieces.

What was the highest gold price ever?
Gold has set repeated all-time highs in recent years. Select the ALL range on the chart above to see every official daily close back to 1968 — including each record high and exactly when it was set.
Is gold traded 24 hours a day?
Very nearly: gold trades continuously from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon (New York time) across Asian, European, and U.S. sessions, closing only on weekends. That is why the price you see can change at any hour.
Prices are indicative rates for informational purposes and are not an offer to buy or sell. The Ask is the price level dealers quote for buying; charts and tables of past prices show market prices and daily closes. Product prices include a premium over spot.
