The reverse of each coin features the effigy of the national female personification Britannia standing firm against a powerful gale. When Emperor Hadrian issued Roman Empire coins with an effigy of Britannia, Britannia first appeared on coins issued in Britain during the period of Roman rule. Since Roman times, it has been used to represent Britain’s strength and dignity on coins. The weight, fineness, and year of minting are also located on the reverse of each coin.
