The rule, in plain English

Missouri exempts gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion of at least 90% purity, and coins worth more than face value (including numismatic coins), from both state and local sales tax with no minimum.

What counts: RSMo 144.815: (1) 'Bullion' means gold, silver, platinum, or palladium in a bulk state, where its value depends on its content rather than its form, with a purity of not less than nine hundred parts per one thousand. (2) 'Investment coins' means "numismatic coins or other forms of money and legal tender manufactured of gold, silver, platinum, palladium or metals with a fair market value greater than the face value of the coins.".

Still taxed: Bullion below 90% purity; private medals or tokens that are neither .900+ bullion nor money/legal tender; paper money (definition covers coins manufactured of metal); jewelry, art and accessories.

This rule took effect on August 28, 2001.

Selling gold in Missouri

Selling gold to a dealer is not a retail purchase, so no sales tax applies. A profit is a capital gain: the IRS taxes gains on gold and silver bullion as collectibles, at up to 28% when held more than a year. Missouri doesn't tax individuals' capital gains from 2025, and a separate law exempts gains on gold and silver coins and bars from 2026.

Dealers have to report some larger sales to the IRS on Form 1099-B; keep your purchase receipts to show your cost.
