Description

The 1908 to 1929 $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle is a timeless piece of American history and a prized addition to any investor’s portfolio or collector’s assemblage. Graded Mint State 62 (MS-62) by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this coin exemplifies quality and preservation, showcasing the intricate details of its unique design.

Historical Significance

Minted at the U.S. Mint’s Philadelphia facility between 1908 and 1929, this coin is one of only two U.S. gold coins to feature an incuse (recessed) design, with the images sunken into the surface rather than raised. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Gold Half Eagle broke from traditional coinage aesthetics, making it a standout in numismatic collections.

Design

  • Obverse: Displays a striking image of a Native American chief wearing a full headdress, encircled by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The word “LIBERTY” arches above, The mint stamp on these coins is on the eagle side just to the left of the arrow heads. No Letter here indicates the Philadelphia mint struck the coin.

  • Reverse: Features a majestic bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the denomination “FIVE DOLLARS.”
