In New York City, gold bars are sold by bullion dealers, most of them on one block of West 47th Street, and by online dealers that deliver to the city. What separates a fair purchase from an expensive one is the premium: what you pay above the value of the gold inside. In Bullion Trading LLC research using two years of our own price records, the random-brand 1 gram bar's median premium was 31.6%, 12 times the 1 oz bar's 2.7%.
Tax is the other New York detail. The state exempts bullion from sales tax only when the bullion on one invoice totals more than $1,000 (Tax Law §1115(a)(27)), so a smaller purchase pays the city’s full 8.875%. Prices have also moved sharply this year: On 3 November 2026 the gold Ask was $3,965 an ounce and silver $50.30, 27% and 58% below the records both set on 29 January 2026. The Ask is the price level dealers quote for buying. Bullion Trading LLC, which publishes this guide, is one of the 47th Street dealers, so the premiums below are one dealer’s records, measured over two years rather than on one day.

Where can you buy gold bars in New York City?
At a bullion dealer, in a store or online. The city’s trade is concentrated on West 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, the Diamond District, where business and property owners formed the 47th Street business improvement district in 1997 (Diamond District Partnership). Most storefronts there sell jewelry and diamonds; fewer deal in bullion, with prices tied to the live spot price.
| Where | What you get | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Bullion dealer on 47th Street or elsewhere | Bars priced from spot; you can inspect the bar and leave with it | A posted price for each payment method and a buy-back desk |
| Online dealer | Wider choice, shipped insured | Shipping, card surcharges, sales tax by delivery address |
| Jeweler or pawnshop | Mostly jewelry; bars now and then | Design and labor costs that resale rarely returns |
| Marketplaces and social media | Many sellers, some “below spot” | Counterfeits and sellers who never ship |
What should a gold bar cost?
The value of its gold at spot plus a premium that shrinks, in percent, as the bar gets bigger. Over two years the random-brand bar's median premium fell from 31.6% at 1 gram to 13.0% at 5 g, 7.9% at 10 g and 2.7% at 1 oz; PAMP's Lady Fortuna ran from 43.4% to 4.1% across the same sizes. A random-brand bar is whichever accredited refiner’s bar the dealer has in stock.
The reason is a cost per piece. Refining, striking, assaying and packaging a 1 gram bar costs nearly as much as a 1 oz bar, so those dollars barely shrink while the gold shrinks 31-fold (a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, per NIST). Above 1 oz the curve flattens, so a bigger bar saves little per ounce. Brand adds less than size: the guide to gold bar brands compares them day by day.
How do you know if a dealer’s price is fair?
Turn the quote into a premium: divide the price by the value of the gold at that moment’s spot price and compare it with what dealers usually charge. Over the 12 months to 3 November 2026, the middle 90% of daily prices for mainstream 1 oz gold coins ran 1.2% to 7.5% over the gold Ask; at the Ask on 3 November 2026, that is about $4,003 to $4,252 a coin. Bars from 1 oz to 1 kilo sit in similar narrow bands.
A quote far above the band usually means a collector product, a small bar, or a card or financing surcharge. A quote below it is the bigger warning. In our records for six common coins and bars, the median price never fell below melt on any of 511 trading days since 27 October 2024; the closest was 0.1% over melt. A bar offered under the value of its gold is more likely fake, stolen or never shipped. Also ask what the dealer would pay to buy the same bar back today: the gap is your round-trip cost. The guide to gold scams lists the other red flags.
What sizes do gold bars come in?
From 1 gram to 1 kilo (32.15 troy ounces), with the 1 oz bar the most widely traded size in between. Larger bars cost less per ounce but must be sold whole.
Whatever the size, look for a refiner on the LBMA Good Delivery list, the London market’s list of accredited refiners, and keep the bar sealed in its assay card. In our experience bars kept in their assay card resell more easily than loose ones, and PAMP bars resell for more than generic bars of the same weight.

Do you pay sales tax on gold bars in New York?
Not when the bullion on one invoice totals more than $1,000. The exemption covers bars, ingots and coins of gold, silver, platinum and palladium sold for investment, and the regulation counts “the total amount of the sale of precious metal bullion on any single invoice” (20 NYCRR 528.29). Below that, state and local sales tax applies, 8.875% in all five boroughs (Publication 718). Bullion invoiced together with taxable items such as jewelry has to be separately stated, or the whole invoice can be taxed.
The rule has survived attempts to narrow it: S7875, a 2025–2026 Senate bill that would have limited the exemption to governments and central banks, died when the session ended in June 2026 (NY Senate). For an order shipped elsewhere, the delivery state’s rule applies; see New York’s bullion sales tax rule and the other states’ pages.
Buying in person or online: what changes?
In person you can inspect the bar, skip shipping and leave with it the same day. If you pay cash, note that a business receiving more than $10,000 in cash in one transaction or related transactions must file IRS Form 8300 within 15 days. Online, the price depends on how you pay. At Bullion Trading LLC, for example: Card and PayPal cost 5% more than the check/wire price and go up to $7,500; wire and check start at $1,000 and need a temporary 10% hold on a card (up to $20,000) until the money arrives. Orders under $1,000 ship by USPS for $10; from $1,000 they ship by FedEx with an adult signature for $10, or free to a FedEx location for pickup. Orders can also be collected free at the store, Monday to Thursday 8:30 to 4 and Friday 8:30 to 1.
How do you check a New York bullion dealer?
Use facts you can confirm away from the dealer’s website. “A person or business that buys or sells used goods” in the city needs a Secondhand Dealer General license from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection; ask for the number and confirm it with the department. Then look for a street address, a Better Business Bureau profile, written prices and return terms, and a buy-back desk. The CFTC adds fees not given in writing and unsolicited calls to its red flags. Bullion Trading LLC’s license is #1304378-DCA; it has traded on 47th Street since 2008, and the Kahan family has been in business there since 1968.

Where can you sell gold bars in New York City?
At the same kind of dealer, at a price below what the dealer sells for; the difference is the spread. Expect to show government photo ID. Bullion Trading LLC buys bullion at its 47th Street counter without an appointment (selling to us).
The case against buying gold bars
Gold pays no interest or dividend, and its price can stay below an old peak for decades. It reached an LBMA price of $850 on 21 January 1980 and did not close above it again until 3 January 2008; after its $1,895 high of 5 September 2011 it took until July 2020 (LBMA). The premium is paid when you buy and the spread when you sell, so a short holding usually loses money even when the price is flat. A bar also has to be kept somewhere: a standard New York homeowners policy pays at most $200 for stolen money, bullion, gold and silver unless they are insured separately (NY DFS). See where to store gold and silver.
The bottom line
Buying a gold bar in New York City is simple: dealers are concentrated on one block of 47th Street, and online stores deliver across the five boroughs. The cost is decided by the premium over spot, lowest in our records on bars of 1 oz and up and highest on gram bars, and by sales tax on invoices with $1,000 or less of bullion. Compare quotes as a percentage over spot, ask for the buy-back price, check the license, and plan storage before the bar comes home.
